Sakina Primary Madrasah

Kano, Nigeria Established 2023Total funded to date: £0

The story

Sakina Primary Madrasah began in 2023 as a single rented room in the old quarter of Kano, with twenty-two children, one teacher and a chalkboard. The community had been asking for years for somewhere their daughters could learn Qur'an, Hausa literacy and English in safety. Athaar's founding members travelled to Kano, met the local imam and the women's council, and agreed a single thing: this would not be a project that ended. It would be a waqf — owned by the children, held by the community, kept in perpetuity. Within ten months the land was gifted, the walls were up, and Sakina was permanently established.
